Diagnosing an ABS Problem

The ABS computer in our cars has an LED (light) that will tell you why the ABS light is on. If the problem is a sensor that is broken/missing, the computer will tell you which one.

On a hatchback (coupe) the light is located on the passenger side, behind the plastic panel next to the rear seat. If you look at the plastic panels on either side of the rear seat, You will see two plastic squares on the passenger side, and one square plastic piece on the driver's side. The piece that is the same on both the drivers side and passenger side is the manual override for the automatic seatbelt (American version teg). The other plastic cover that is on the passenger side only is the one that covers the ABS light on the ABS computer.

On a Sedan (4 door) the access cover is located in the trunk on the passenger side fender wheel cover.

If you pop out this cover, you will have access to the light behind it. The light is not very bright, and it is not directly behind the hole. It will probably be better to look for it at night and move your head around to get the best angle to see it at.

Once you have the cover removed, Have someone turn on the ignition (turn the key until the Dash lights up) while you look into the hole and find the blinking LED. The LED will start blinking CODES 10 seconds after the key is turned on.

(Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to jumper any service connectors to get the computer to blink the ABS codes.)

The LED will blink to indicate MAIN CODES and SUB codes..

Here is what you will see once the key is turned on...

10 second pause......MAIN CODE...1 second pause...SUB CODE (if applicable)...5 second pause...NEXT MAIN CODE...1 second pause...NEXT SUB CODE (if applicable)...5 second pause... and so on

Some Main Codes have sub codes, some do not. so you might just see Main codes separated by 5 second pauses. the computer can store up to 3 codes, so you'll be able to see up to three things that are wrong with the system at a time.

Here are the codes:

Main codes:

Main Code 1) ABS Pump Overrun - this means there is a problem with the pump, accumulator or pressure switch that is causing the pump to run continuously for more than 120 seconds.

Main Code 2) Parking brake switch - this means the system is receiving a signal from the parking brake switch as if you were driving with the parking brake on.

Main Code 3) Pulsors - this means the sensors on the wheels are not "seeing" the teeth on the rings that tell it the wheels are turning. This Main Code has sub codes that tell it which wheel has the problem. 
   sub code 1) Front Right Wheel
   sub code 2) Front Left Wheel
   sub code 4) One of the rear wheels (could be either one)

Main Code 4) Wheel sensor - This means the ABS computer is not getting any response from one of the four wheel sensors. the sensor is either bad or disconnected. sub codes are:
   sub code 1) Front right 
   sub code 2) Front Left
   sub code 3) Rear right
   sub code 4) Rear Left

Main Code 5) Rear wheel lock - this means the sensors in the rear wheels are telling the ABS computers that the wheel is locked (not turning) while the car is in motion. sub codes are:
   sub code 4) Rear right
   sub code 8) rear Left
   no sub code) Both wheels

Main Code 6) Fail Safe Relay 

Main Code 7) solenoid related problem.
